Alaska is by far the largest state in the United States by land area, covering about 663,300 square miles. It's more than twice the size of Texas, the second-largest state. Alabama, Arizona, and Arkansas are among the smaller states. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 and became the 49th state in 1959.
