Yuri Gagarin was the first Russian (and first human) in space on April 12, 1961, aboard Vostok 1. He completed one orbit of Earth in 108 minutes. Gagarin's historic flight made him an international hero and marked a major milestone in the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States.
