The Oscars (Academy Awards) are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional honorary organization dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of motion pictures. The Academy was founded in 1927 and the first Oscars were presented in 1929. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) was a major film studio, not the organizing body for the awards.
