This occurred because Lancia had withdrawn from Formula 1 earlier that year after the death of their driver Eugenio Castellotti. Ferrari inherited the sophisticated Lancia-Ferrari D50 cars, which Fangio drove to his fourth World Championship title. The Lancia D50 was technologically advanced and gave Ferrari the competitive edge they needed that season.
