Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha, was born in Lumbini (in present-day Nepal). Patliputra (modern-day Patna) was the capital of the Mauryan Empire where Buddha's teachings spread, and Sarnath is where he gave his first sermon after enlightenment. Teraiy is not a historically significant location in Buddhist tradition.
