BASIC stands for "Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code" and was designed at Dartmouth College in 1964 to make programming accessible to non-science students. The possessive "Beginners'" (with apostrophe) is grammatically correct in the official name. It became one of the most widely taught languages.
