The nine-banded armadillo is the only known animal besides humans that can naturally contract leprosy (Hansen's disease). This unique susceptibility makes them invaluable for leprosy research. Their low body temperature allows the leprosy-causing bacteria to grow, unlike in most other animals. Tigers, elk, and king cobras are not known to contract leprosy.
