William Perkin accidentally created mauveine, the first synthetic dye (aniline dye), while attempting to synthesize quinine from coal tar derivatives. This serendipitous discovery launched the synthetic dye industry. Bug repellants, food preservatives, and transparent plastics were developed much later by other inventors.
