The Union Steel Ministry pushed back the target to achieve 124 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) domestic steel production capacity to 2012-13. What is the steel production capacity in the country currently (2010)?

The time-frame to achieve the target of 124 mtpa domestic steel production capacity would now be 2012-13, this is due to some slow down in investments last year because of the recession, informed Steel Secretary, Atul Chaturvedi recently. The current steel production capacity in the country is 62 mtpa, including public and private sector units. The Steel Ministry had earlier envisioned doubling the production capacity by 2011-12.
