Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe by far, constituting approximately 75% of all normal matter by mass. While oxygen is the most abundant element in Earths crust, nitrogen dominates Earths atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is a compound not an element - hydrogen reigns supreme in cosmic abundance. Stars, including our Sun, are primarily powered by hydrogen fusion.
