Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), founded in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mukherjee, was the parent organization of BJP. After Emergency, BJS merged into Janata Party, and later the BJP was formed in 1980 by former BJS members. RSS is the ideological parent, not the direct political parent.
