The Kangra Fort was built by the Royal family of Kangra (the Katoch dynasty), with its origins traced back to the legendary Raja Susharma Chandra. He is mentioned in the Mahabharata as an ally of the Kauravas. The fort is one of the oldest and largest in the Himalayas.
