Ireland had a constitutional ban on divorce until 1995, when a narrow referendum removed the prohibition. This made Ireland distinctive among Western democracies for restricting divorce for so long. Scotland, Canada, and Denmark all had divorce laws permitting the dissolution of marriages much earlier.
