Punjab was reorganized on 1 November 1966 when the larger Punjab state was divided into Punjab and Haryana, with Chandigarh as a shared capital and Union Territory. This division was based on linguistic lines, with the predominantly Punjabi-speaking areas forming the new Punjab state.
