During the 17th century, the English East India Company exported various goods from India to Europe. Spices (especially pepper), tea, and cotton textiles were major exports. Indigo, however, was not a significant export to Europe during this period. The indigo trade became more prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries when it was used for dyeing textiles in Europe's growing textile industries.
