The Northern Red-bellied snake uses thanatosis (playing dead) as a defense mechanism. When threatened or captured, they stiffen their body and flip over, appearing lifeless. They do not spit venom (they're harmless colubrids), shed their skin on demand, or bite repeatedly. This behavior effectively discourages predators who prefer live prey.
