E. B. Tylor (Edward Burnett Tylor), in his 1871 book 'Primitive Culture', provided this foundational definition: 'Culture, or civilization, taken in its wide ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.' This is widely regarded as the first scientific definition of culture in anthropology.
