Gandhiji's first fast in India was in 1918 in support of Ahmedabad mill workers' strike for higher wages. He fasted for three days until the workers and owners reached a settlement, establishing fasting as a powerful tool of nonviolent resistance. This preceded his more famous political fasts related to national issues.
