The Raman Effect, discovered by Indian physicist C.V. Raman in 1928, is used to study molecular energy levels and molecular vibrations. When light interacts with molecules, most of it is elastically scattered (Rayleigh scattering), but a small fraction is inelastically scattered (Raman scattering) with shifted energy levels corresponding to molecular vibrational modes. This effect provides valuable information about molecular structure, bonding, and energy states.
