An illusion is a misperception or distortion of a real, external stimulus - the brain incorrectly interprets something that is actually there. This differs from hallucination (perception without any real stimulus), delusion (fixed false belief not based on reality), and delirium (acute confusional state with fluctuating consciousness). In illusions, the object exists but is perceived incorrectly, such as seeing a rope as a snake in poor light.
