Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is the recommended disinfectant for cleaning blood spills because it is effective against bloodborne pathogens including HIV and hepatitis B and C. It is inexpensive, readily available, and has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Iodine, alcohol, and quaternary ammonium compounds are not the first choice for blood spill decontamination.
