During seed germination, the radicle (embryonic root) is the first structure to emerge from the seed. The radicle penetrates the soil first to anchor the seedling and begin water absorption. The plumule (shoot) emerges later, while hypocotyl and epicotyl are regions of the stem that develop after the radicle has established.
