On 17th December, 1961 India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru ordered the military invasion and liberation of Goa and it was the 3,000 ill - equipped troops of the Portuguese which saw them surrender after being outnumbered by 30,000 Indian troops, supported by the Indian air force and navy. On 19th december 1961 Goa became free from Portuguese.
