Punjab is called the 'Granary of India' due to its extremely high agricultural productivity, especially in wheat and rice. Despite being smaller than Uttar Pradesh, Punjab's alluvial soils, extensive irrigation, and high cropping intensity make it the leading grain producer. The Green Revolution began here in the 1960s.
