Andhra Pradesh became the first Indian state to be created on a linguistic basis in 1953, following the prolonged Potti Sriramulu fasting movement and death in 1952. The state was carved out of the Telugu-speaking areas of the Madras Presidency. This event marked the beginning of the linguistic reorganization of Indian states, which was formalized by the States Reorganisation Act of 1956. Gujarat was created in 1960, Haryana in 1966, and Kerala also in 1956, all after Andhra Pradesh.
