Silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) is the most abundant mineral compound in Earth's crust, constituting about 59% of the crust by volume. It is the primary component of sand and quartz, and forms the basis for most igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. While bauxite (aluminum ore), manganese, and iron are important minerals, they occur in much smaller quantities compared to silica. The abundance of silica reflects the dominance of oxygen and silicon as the two most abundant elements in the Earth's crust.
