Azo dyes contain one or more azo groups (-N=N-) as the chromophore. Methyl orange (sodium 4-[(4-dimethylamino)phenylazo]benzenesulfonate) contains a characteristic azo linkage between aromatic rings, making it a classic example of an azo dye used as a pH indicator. Alizarin is an anthraquinone dye, Indigo is a vat dye, and Martius yellow is an azo dye but less commonly cited as the example.
