Acetylene on polymerization forms

Acetylene undergoes cyclotrimerization to form benzene when heated or in the presence of a catalyst. Three acetylene molecules (C2H2) combine to form a benzene ring (C6H6) in this polymerization reaction. This is an important industrial process for benzene production and demonstrates how simple unsaturated hydrocarbons can form aromatic compounds.
