Laplace is credited with the nebular hypothesis explaining the origin of the Earth and solar system, which proposes that the solar system formed from a rotating nebula of gas and dust. While Kant proposed an earlier version, Laplace's mathematical model (1796) became the most influential formulation of the theory.
