Zen Buddhism originated in China before spreading to Japan, and has gained significant popularity in the West, particularly America, during the 20th century. While Ladakh and Tibet practice Tibetan Buddhism, and South East Asia follows Theravada traditions, Japan and America are indeed major centers of contemporary Zen practice.
