The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that contains photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) which convert light into neural signals. The cornea is the transparent front surface, the sclera is the white outer layer, and the iris controls pupil size. Only the retina contains actual nerve endings for sight.
