Epicalyx is an accessory whorl of bracteoles located just below the calyx (outermost whorl of the flower). It is distinct from the calyx and is formed by the modification of bracteoles, as seen in Hibiscus and other members of the Malvaceae family. Bracts are larger leaf-like structures at the base of inflorescences, while epicalyx is specifically made of bracteoles.
