In 1690 Calcutta was founded by whom?

Job Charnock, an agent of the East India Company, is traditionally credited with founding Calcutta in August 1690 when he established a factory and fortified settlement at Sutanuti. Charnock chose the location strategically near the Hooghly River and combined three villages - Sutanuti, Gobindapur, and Kalikata - to form the basis of modern Kolkata. This settlement became a major trading center and eventually the capital of British India until 1911.
