Red soil gets its characteristic red color from the presence of iron oxides, particularly hematite (Fe2O3), which forms when iron-rich minerals weather and oxidize over time. This process occurs in warm, moderately wet climates where oxidation is prevalent. The color has nothing to do with phosphorus, humus, or nitrogen.
