The Maharashtra plateau is primarily composed of basalt rock, part of the vast Deccan Traps volcanic province formed about 66 million years ago. This extensive basaltic lava flow covers much of western and central India. The basalt gives the region its characteristic black soil (regur), which is very fertile for cotton cultivation.
