Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a powerful neurotoxin. The bacteria typically enter the body through wounds, cuts, or puncture injuries, especially from contaminated objects like rusty nails. Fungi, protozoa, and viruses cause other diseases but not tetanus.
