The Naxalite movement originated in 1967 in the Naxalbari region of Darjeeling district, West Bengal, as an armed peasant uprising against landlords. Led by Charu Mazumdar and Kanu Sanyal, it advocated Maoist ideology and protracted people's war. The movement later spread to other states but began in West Bengal.
