Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area (approximately 82,100 sq km). The Caspian Sea is larger by surface area (371,000 sq km) but it is a saltwater lake, not freshwater. Lake Superior contains about 12,100 cubic km of water, making it the third largest by volume among freshwater lakes.
