Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) has two phosphate groups, whereas adenosine triphosphate (ATP) has three. Consequently, ATP stores more energy, and ADP has less energy content compared to ATP. It functions as a lower-energy precursor that gets phosphorylated to become ATP.
