UNIX is not actually an acronym - the name was a pun on 'Multics', the operating system from which UNIX was developed. The creators (Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others) wanted something simpler than Multics, and UNIX was originally spelled 'Unics' (Uniplexed Information and Computing Service), but eventually became UNIX without being a true acronym.
