The first session of the Indian National Congress was held in Bombay (now Mumbai) from December 28-31, 1885, with 72 delegates attending. AO Hume, a retired British civil servant, founded the Congress to provide a platform for political dialogue and educated Indians to participate in governance. Bombay was chosen as it was a major commercial center with good connectivity.
