The Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, arriving from East Polynesia around 1280 AD. They developed a distinct culture, language (te reo Maori), and society before European contact. Maori culture is integral to New Zealand's national identity, and the Treaty of Waitangi (1840) recognized their rights. They are not from Nigeria, Egypt, or Brazil.
