Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was a free African American mathematician, astronomer, and inventor who is widely regarded as one of the first African-American inventors. He constructed a wooden clock that kept precise time, predicted solar eclipses, and assisted in surveying the boundaries of Washington D.C.
