Christopher Sholes invented the first practical typewriter in 1867, which later evolved into the modern QWERTY keyboard. William Austin Burt had created an earlier typewriter prototype in 1829, but Sholes' version was commercially successful. Shockley worked on transistors, Pascal on calculating machines, and Waterman on fountain pens.
