Muhammad Shah (1748 - 1802), also known as Roshan Akhtar, was the Mughal emperor of India between 1719 and 1748. He was the son of Khujista Akhtar Jahan Shah, the 4th son of Bahadur Shah I. Ascending the throne at the age of seventeen with the help of the Sayyid Brothers, he later got rid of them with the help of Nizam ul Mulk Chin Qilich Khan. During this time, the Maratha War (1723 - 1737) began and it became a solely destructive war for the Mughals. Furthermore, in 1724, Oudh became independent under Nawab Saadat Ali Khan.
