The peptidoglycan of a gram negative bacterium consists of fewer number of layers and it is thin. In addition to this, the outer lipopolysaccharide layer is not permeable to antibiotics like penicillin. Therefore, a typical gram negative bacterium is less sensitive to antibiotics.
