Some building are provided with lighting conductors to protect them form damage from lighting strikes. A lighting conductor consists of a set of metal spikes fitted at the top of a building  and connected by a metal strip to a copper plate buried in the earth. When negative charges are build up in a cloud, positive charges from earth travel through the lighting conductor and air to meet the charges in the cloud and neutralize them.
