Sunspots are caused by concentrated local magnetic fields that inhibit convection in the Sun's photosphere. This reduced heat transport makes these regions cooler than surrounding areas, appearing darker against the brighter solar surface. They are not related to volcanic activity, craters, or hydrogen deficiency.
