Monerans (bacteria and cyanobacteria) are the most primitive organisms because they are prokaryotic - they lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Protists (B), fungi (C), and algae (D) are all eukaryotes with more complex cellular organization. Prokaryotes evolved before eukaryotes.
