Blood group O is characterized by the absence of both A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells. However, individuals with type O blood possess both anti-A and anti-B antibodies in their plasma. This makes type O the universal donor for red blood cells, as their cells can be transfused to recipients of any ABO type without triggering an immune response.
